Awkwafina on her star-making role in The Farewell
The influx of new Asian lead movies coming out this year is such a huge win and The Farewell was without a question the one I was most excited for. Much like Tigertail, the film wasn't revolutionary in its storyline because it would instead feel like a highlight reel showcasing memories you've lived many times over. The movie's key theme addresses the clash between Eastern and Western philosophies, particularly the idea of the collective over the self. This divide was perfectly represented in the wedding sequence, where tables of drunk Asians danced and celebrated to dim the reality of death and grief. Add it to your list!
